The Lotus Flowers
THE LOTUS FLOWERS
The lotus flowers on our fishpond
open their petals at dawn
like two palms cupping upward
to receive the sun, the rain.
And then in the evening, at twilight,
they fold each petal back in,
palms pressed as if in devotion
a quiet, grateful prayer.
This has helped me to savor
the simple rhythms of the day-
kitchen, dishes, writing desk,
the path around the field.
